Lakeland Ridge Students Awaken Compassion During Wake-a-thon Fundraiser for Charity

Sherwood Park, AB. — Grade 9 students at Lakeland Ridge are staying up past their bedtimes and getting their school community involved during their charitable wake-a-thon fundraiser on April 28. All funds raised will be given to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation.

As part of planning for their Grade 9 Farewell activities, Peyton Caljouw and Sophia Parsons are student organizers for the wake-a-thon. “I’m excited to have gotten this opportunity to put together a night that all Grade 9 students can look forward to,” says Caljouw, a Grade 9 student at Lakeland Ridge. “Sophia and I have been with most of these people since Kindergarten and we’re so happy to be able to experience a fun event with them all one last time.”

While the wake-a-thon is only for Grade 9 students, all Lakeland Ridge families and community members are encouraged to support the fundraiser by dropping off their empty bottles at the school on Friday during the day. Those interested in supporting the fundraiser can also make online donations directly to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation.

“It’s wonderful to see such initiative in students,” says Jeff Huculak, the Principal at Lakeland Ridge. “They’re already developing their leadership qualities, becoming top notch role models and leaving a positive legacy as they prepare to enter Grade 10. The memories they make at the wake-a-thon are ones they’ll never forget, and I have no doubt they’ll find success in the next steps of their lives.”

Lakeland Ridge’s fundraising goal is to raise $2,000 for the Foundation. This objective is important to the school because the charitable organization’s mission resonates with students and staff. For the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation nothing is more important than the health and well-being of kids. The organization works to make sure there’s continual support and awareness for the essential services the Hospital provides each and every day.

“The wake-a-thon is a great way to support the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation and benefit the children who use it,” says Parsons, a Grade 9 student at Lakeland Ridge. “A small donation from multiple individuals could turn around someone's life for the better, so why not do it in a way where everyone has fun!”
